Active Travel in the UK - Swaledale, North Yorkshire

Today's travel blog comes from North Yorkshire, and what we think is the most beautiful of the Dales, Swaledale.

Feeling ready for some UK travel ideas? Since outdoors is best at the moment (and not everything is open, and what is might be extra busy), we have a blog to help you find UK travel ideas to help you enjoy the outdoors.

Askrigg in Swaledale is a beautiful little village (with lovely pubs if you can make it in), as well as a delicious cake shop to reward yourself after the walking.  We recommend staying here if you can, or nearby Hawes has pubs and accommodation as well.

Nearby is famous Aysgarth Falls – we would prefer to stick away from the big tourist spots at the moment, as it is difficult to distance and facilities become overrun. Safety first!

To get your waterfall fix, from Askrigg head up Mill Lane to Mill Gill water falls direct from the village centre. To max out the drama, Whitfield Gill can be added to the walk, but it's much trickier walking up there so please take that into consideration.

We liked this walk so much we added it to our Little Book of Walks & Snacks by Enjoy Eco Box, coming soon to our Enjoy the Outdoors deluxe and mini boxes. This will give a guide to a few classic favourite walks, as well as snack recipes to help power your adventures. There’ll be room for your own favourites as well!

This walk can be made into a figure of 8 with Askrigg in the centre by walking the loop to the south east of the village to meet the River Ure and Nappa.  Use OS map Explorer OL30 Yorkshire Dales - Northern & Central as your guide.

For another day in this area, we also highly recommend the walk between Muker and Keld – this walk follows the river valley and is pretty easy with limited uphill – always good in the Dales! The views down the valley are far reaching and every turn is photogenic. Fun fact: Keld is on the coast to coast walk as well, so you might see a few more walkers and cyclists around.

Happy exploring!
